From Clown Nose to Balloon Artist Extraordinare: My Journey as a Balloon Artist in the Des Moines Metro

I’m Daniel Poe, and I’m so glad you’ve found your way to Creations With A Twist! Here’s a little about me, my balloon journey, and how my passion has grown into a business that brings smiles to faces across Des Moines and the Midwest.

Growing Up in Central Iowa

I grew up in Ankeny, a vibrant and growing community just outside Des Moines. My wife, a proud Roosevelt graduate, is from Des Moines. After we got married, we chose to settle in Ankeny. She works locally, and I don’t mind commuting for my full-time job. Ankeny has been a wonderful place to raise our family, and it’s where Creations With A Twist was born.

How It All Started

Believe it or not, my journey with balloons began in a clowning group. Yes, you read that right—a youth church program where I donned the makeup, the nose, and the costume. While clowning itself wasn’t my thing (I don't miss the makeup), I discovered something magical: a passion for balloon art.

I loved the creativity, the challenge, and the joy it brought to others. My parents were incredible. They recognized my passion and supported me every step of the way. Whether it was providing the tools I needed, taking me to conventions across the country, driving me all over Iowa, encouraging my creativity, or just being my biggest cheerleaders, they made me believe I could turn this into something special. Their love and belief in me are the foundation of everything I’ve built today. Twenty-two years later I'm one of the best balloon artists in the Midwest.

Bringing Balloon Creations to Life

At events, my goal is to keep things fun and personal. I like to let guests pick their favorite designs—whether it’s a cute animal, a beloved character, or something totally one-of-a-kind. While I’m happy to work with a pre-set menu for clients who want to keep the line moving quickly, I love surprising kids with customized creations. Even without a menu, I move fast—making sure every child leaves with a big smile and a balloon creation they’ll never forget.

Beyond twisting, I specialize in creating stunning balloon decor for events of all kinds, from birthday parties to weddings and corporate gatherings. Whether you’re looking for arches, garlands, or something totally unique, I’m here to bring your vision to life.

Life Outside the Balloons

When I’m not at events or setting up balloon decor, I’m at home with my incredible wife and our identical twin 3-year-old daughters. These two little ones are my enthusiastic “assistants.” They love to help Dad make balloons, prep decor, and even reload my gig bag. Life with twins is always an adventure, and there’s never a dull moment in our house! I'm also a boardgame geek!

Thank You for Supporting My Small Business

From the bottom of my heart, thank you for supporting Creations With A Twist. When you hire me for your event or share kind words about my work, you’re helping support my family and my dream. I’m so grateful for each of you, and I look forward to creating more balloon magic for your special moments.

As we wrap up the year, I want to wish you all a Merry Christmas, a Happy New Year, and a 2025 filled with joy, laughter, and plenty of balloons!

Warm regards,

Daniel Poe
